In accordance with §1007.271 Florida Statutes,
FIU offers accelerated, college-level courses that do not duplicate
existing high school academic work. The dual enrollment program
provides an opportunity for students to earn high school and college
credit simultaneously. In order to be eligible for participation
in the dual enrollment program, a high school student must have (1)
completed his/her sophomore year, (2) achieved a grade point average of
3.0 or higher, (3) satisfied any course prerequisites, and (4) received
approval of the high school principal or designee. Click here for additional general information. (The University waives the tuition. This means
participating students shall be exempt from the payment of registration
and laboratory fees). Dual enrollment is open to public high
school students and to certain non-public and home-schooled high school
students, as specified in §1007.271 Florida Statutes.
You may refer to the University Core Curriculum Check-Off Form for course suggestions. However, keep in mind that certain
courses require prerequisites or placement testing. Also, most
courses that begin with a 1 or a 2 except English and Math are
acceptable. English and Math require a PSAT of 50 or an SAT of
500 on the appropriate section. If you have neither, you will
need to take the College Placement Test (CPT).
High School Graduation Subject Requirement Satisfied By Dual Enrollment Courses
Note:
Courses in Florida are considered the same if they have the same
three-letter prefix and if the last three digits in the four-digit
number are the same. They may have different titles, or the first digit
of the course number may be different at different postsecondary
institutions. But if the prefix and last three digits are the same, it
is the same course.
How are dual enrollment courses weighted?
School
districts are required to weight college-level dual enrollment courses
the same as honors and AP courses when grade point averages are
calculated. State universities are not required to weight dual
enrollment credit in calculating grade point averages for admission.
Will dual enrollment courses transfer to other colleges and universities?
Dual
enrollment college credit will transfer to any public college or
university offering that course with the same prefix and number and
must be treated as though taken at the receiving institution. However,
if students do not, upon high school graduation, attend the same
college or university where they earned the dual enrollment credit, the
application of transfer credit to general education, prerequisite, and
degree programs may vary at the receiving institution.
Is dual enrollment right for everyone?
The
dual enrollment program is an opportunity to take challenging courses
and accelerate education opportunities. Students who successfully
complete dual enrollment courses will save time toward their college
degree and save money with free tuition. Dual enrollment courses are
college courses. Students should understand that the amount of work
necessary to succeed in dual enrollment courses may be much greater
than in high school courses. In addition, dual enrollment courses
become a part of a student's permanent college transcript. It is
important to do well in these courses to realize all the benefits of
dual enrollment.
